2010 Financial Goals
1. Rebuild Emergency Fund by Saving Automatically - The emergency fund that my honey and I tried to build in 2009 went away thanks to our future home. Fortunately, we were also saving automatically by setting aside a certain percentage of our gross monthly salary. By the end of 2009, our emergency fund would amount to around Php62,000. Based on my calculations, that would be around 3 to 4 months’ worth of expenses. According to Suze Orman, we should shoot for an 8 month emergency fund, and that’s what we’re going to aim for in 2010.
2. Save Php100,000 yearly - This is not actually a goal because it is mandatory action item for the next 5 years. That’s because we have to pay a lump sum of Php100,000 every year as part of our down payment for our home.
3. Create a Wedding Fund - Engagement Ring? CHECK. Venue? CHECK. Date? Well, tentatively it’s in 2012. But if this Wedding Fund is raised faster than expected, then I’ll probably announce which month. Currently, the equation for this fund is WF = Income - Automatic Savings - Expenses.
4. Create a Vacation Fund - My honey and I have been contemplating on going to Hong Kong to celebrate our anniversary. But we can’t afford to take any more money out of our savings, hence, the Vacation Fund. We’ll probably need to find additional sources of income to raise this fund.
5. Invest for the long term - in 2009, I traded for short term gains. And I did make some money. But I missed the boat on some mini-bull runs that could have been compensated by investing some for the long term. My options are Mutual Funds, UITFs, Corporate Bonds, and Stocks.
