The Easier Way To Connect A Huawei E220 On A Mac
- 4 Comment
More than month ago, my Sun Broadband Wireless modem (Huawei E220) got fried due to overheating (according to Robi of The Sun Shop). I turned in the modem and they (Sun) gladly lent me a service unit. Last Wednesday, I got a call from Robi who gave me some good news (or so I thought). He called to tell me that they replaced my fried modem with a new Huawei E220 modem. So I went to the Sun Shop a day later and did get my new shiny Huawei E220 modem. But things didn’t quite turn out the way I expected. The new modem has a dated firmware, and it didn’t exactly work the way it should. For the last two nights, I get frequent disconnections, and worse, the Mobile Connect app hangs, and I have to disconnect the modem to make sure my Mac doesn’t get a Kernel Panic (Mac’s version of Windows’ Blue Screen of Death).
So I googled around looking for a solution. But I’ve already seen and tried most of the proposed solutions. Until I found this post by Aldian Prakoso, which worked perfectly on my Mac and Sun Broadband Wireless that uses a Huawei E220 modem. Hey Aldian, If ever you read this, I hope you don’t mind me reposting the steps to have an easier way to connect a Huwaei E220 on a Mac. Here it goes:
- Download the Huawei E220 Mac driver. It’s a zip file that contains the Huawei E220 modem driver for Mac OS X, and the Data Card App that lets you configure you network’s APN
- Install the driver (MacDriver(2.7)-intel.pkg)
- Plug your Huawei E220 into your Mac
- Run HuaweiDataCardApp and key in your network’s APN. For Sun Broadband Wireless Plan 999 subscribers, you may refer to the screenshot below:
- Create the connection on your Mac:
- System Preferences > Network
- Click + to create new service. It opens a drop down menu then choose Huawei Modem from the Interface.
- Telephone Number: *99#
- Account Name: your account name (leave it blank if your ISP doesn’t require it)
- Password: your account password (leave it blank if your ISP doesn’t require it)
- Click Advanced
- Vendor: Other
- Model: Huawei Mobile Connect - 3G Modem
- Check the Enable error correction and compression in modem
- Dial mode: Ignore dial tone when dialing
- Click the PPP tab
- Settings: Configuration
- Uncheck the Send PPP echo packets
- Also, you might wanna throw in some DNS settings to help your speed up your browsing
That’s it. No more need to open Mobile Connect. No more need to input your password when dialing. Just click connect, and you’re done. Happy 3G surfing…:D

Hey, no worry. Glad you sorted out your problem and got your modem working again.
It was also frustrated me when my modem didn’t get to work.
Now I still can’t figure out why my MacBook can’t connect to my PCs in my home network and vice versa. Each of them can ping each other correctly but they just can’t connect (my PCs don’t ever show up in my MacBook’s Finder).
I tried everything that I can think off:
- Turn off the PCs’ firewall
- Install Bonjour For WindowsBut they still can’t connect.
Do you have any idea?
P.S. Subscribe To Comments plugin is nice to have

Hi Aldian,
I don’t have a home network to test what you are doing but I can surely share my Huawei’s internet connection on my Mac to the PC and vice versa. I’ll try the plugin some other time. Thanks for the visit.
