How To Unlock The Huawei E220 Modem
As of this writing, I am connected to Smart 3G via my Sun Broadband Wireless-provided Huawei E220 modem. Yup, you read it right, my SBW modem is now SIM-free, or more commonly known here in the Philippines as “open line”. As expected, Smart 3G is no big improvement (in terms of speed) as compared to Sun Broadband Wireless. But at least I don’t get disconnected as often. Well, I shouldn’t be because I’m paying Php20.36 per f’n hour! Here’s a series of speed test results:

How did I do it? Well, it was easy. I just RTFM (read the f****** manual). Thanks to Ed of PhilMug who shared the link, and to Indunil Abayarathna, author of the said manual, I am now able to connect to the internet with whatever network I want. And of course, I am writing this to also share it with you. Learn how to unlock the Huawei E220 modem by clicking here, or download a pdf version of the same page here.
The unlocking procedure was done via Windows XP within the Mac via VMware. Yep, unfortunately, there is no Mac version for the Huawei E220 unlock software yet. But it’s all good. At least, after a few minutes, your Huawei E220 modem is already SIM-free (open line). There you have it. Happy 3G surfing!

You can actually upgrade your E220 USB 3G modem to 7.2 Mbps. I have done it already. No money involved, just get the latest firmware and your 3G modem runs at 7.2 Mbps :)…Vodacom is not posting a link to the firmware but it is here in my post >>
