3G Internet Connection Sharing Over WiFi On Windows XP

Thanks to my honey for lending me her Windows XP-based laptop. If not for her, this post would not be possible. As promised, I am going to share with you today a step by step procedure on how to share your 3G internet connection over wifi using the Internet Connection Sharing feature on Windows XP SP2. Yuga has a similar post but he uses Vista, so I thought, since XP is still the dominant OS in the market, why not make one for XP too. So here it is.

Hardware Requirements:

  • Laptop or Desktop with WiFi card. Most laptops and netbooks already have WiFi built-in. This PC will act as the host PC that will share its 3G internet connection.
  • 3G modem connected on your PC’s USB port. For this article, I used Huawei E220 on Sun Broadband Wireless.
  • Another laptop, WiFi-enabled desktop, or any other wifi-enabled device such as the iPhone, PSP, or iPod touch. In my previous experiments, my MacBook was able to successfully connect to my honey’s ad hoc network.

Now that you have the hardware ready, it’s time to get your hands dirty (well, not really. It is as easy as 1-2-3):

  1. Enable Internet Connection Sharing. To do that, go to Network Connections and locate your 3G internet connection’s dialer. Right click and select properties. From the properties window, select the Advanced tab. Tick the check box for to enable Internet Connection Sharing. Select Wireless Network Connection to enable sharing via WiFi.

  2. Create a wireless computer-to-computer network (also known as ad-hoc network). At the taskbar, right click on your the Wireless Network Connection icon. A window opens to let you choose a wireless network. On the left side of the window, click on the “Change advanced settings” link. You will be directed to the Wireless Network Connection Properties window. On this window, click the Wireless Network tab. Click the Add button to create a new wireless network. Make sure you tick the check box at the lower left side of the window to make your new
wireless network an ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network. Adding network security protocols are optional but recommended.

  3. And that’s it! Now go get another PC, Mac, PSP, iPhone, iPod touch, or whatever, and connect to the new ad hoc network you just created. On Windows XP, you’ll know you have successfully connected when you see something like this:

    connect-to-adhoc

There you have it. Everytime you connect to your Smart Bro, Globe Broadband Tattoo (formerly Globe Visibility), or Sun Broadband Wireless, any device that accesses your ad hoc network will have access to the internet as well. hi! interested ako to find out if its possible to connect my sunbroadband modem to my PC ( windows xp) then meron kc akong laptop (2nd unit) na gusto ko rin sana i-connect sa internet simultaneously sabay sa PC ko. Usually kc nag oonline games ako sa PC, since mas mataas video card ko dun, then yung laptop naman ginagamit ng sister ko. Meron po ba kayo alam pano to connect my Linksys WRT54G wireless router? Thanks!

I just want to add that there are applications that also let you share you internet 3G connection directly from the phone. One of them is joikuspot, but it is not free. You have to shell out a few bucks for a little convinience…

    @kyle - thanks for visiting.
@Pavel, @kyle - please verify how your devices obtain their IP addresses. Based on experience, it would be best to set your host PC’s IP address manually and set your wifi devices to obtain their IPs automatically. Let me know if that would work for you. It did for me. :)

Hi Putchi! Thanks for the visit. Did you set your wireless network to create a network key (WEP) automatically? If so, you should manually set a network key, which you will input on the iPhone when you connect to your wireless network. I hope this helps. :D

I have an MSI Wind U100, Asus EEE PC 1000H and Sun Wireless Broadband Postpaid. I followed the steps and got both netbooks connected wirelessly. I even turned off Windows firewall and the anti-virus software. Here’s the result:
    1. I can browse the Internet on the notebook directly connected to the Sun 3G modem. I can’t browse on the other notebook sharing the Internet connection wirelessly.
    2. I did a ping command on both netbooks IP addresses to see if they are connected. Ping was successful.
    3. I was able to browse the other netbook’s folders and open files (by enabling Folder Sharing) wirelessly.

It’s only the Internet browsing on the other notebook that is not working.

HI Henry! Thank your for visiting my blog. About your problem, try to make your wireless network’s IP address similar to that of Sun’s. Ex: If your Sun Broadband’s IP is 10.4.14.163, then set your wireless network’s IP to 10.4.14.xxx. Let me know if this works. :)

Hi Mavie, thank you for visiting. Please check the IP address of your internet provider. Make the IP of your wireless network similar to that of your internet connection. That should do the trick. I hope this helps. :)

Thank you for the tutorial! I would like to share my experience with this.
I tried this using a windows 7 laptop as the one directly connected to the 3g modem. I was able to connect a second laptop (with windows xp) through the ad hoc network, as was able to surf the internet.

I then tried to connect my mobile phone and it was able to detect and connect to the ad hoc network, but cannot able to surf the internet.

Tried the one for Mac (which if I may add, is soooo much simpler). Everything works GREAT! Both the Windows XP laptop and my mobile phone was able to connect through the ad hoc and surf the internet.
