My SBW Modem Got Fried

The Huawei E220 modem that came with my Sun Broadband Wireless account just got fried. It can’t be recognized on my MacBook and on my girlfriend’s Windows XP-based laptop. And it smells fried. More on that later. Fortunately, my honey bought a prepaid Globe Visibility last Sunday. As such, I am able to post about this unfortunate event.

Anyway, here are some speed test results for Globe Visibility Prepaid:

That’s fast. But for its price (Php20/hour), I’d rather stick with my unlimited Sun Broadband at only Php649/month. But since my modem is fried, I have no choice. How I wish I had an HSDPA phone to use SBW while the modem is unusable.

Back to the title of this post. Why did my Huawei E220 modem get fried? I don’t know. Maybe because of a sudden power surge on my Mac’s USB bus. Or because I tried to connect it to my firewire port (Silly me! LOL!). Or maybe it can’t take the abuse of overnight surfing and downloading anymore. Fortunately, I was able to talk to James (of Sun Shop) regarding my modem. He advised me to go to the Sun Shop tomorrow to have my modem diagnosed. I just hope Sun Cellular would replace the modem for free since it’s less than three months old anyway.
