Subtraction By Addition
I recently subscribed to Sun Broadband Wireless for my internet surfing, downloading, and blogging needs. And last week, I moved to a solo room in the condo-sharing unit that I rent.
By having unlimited internet access anywhere, I could blog wherever and whenever I need to, and I don’t need wifi from coffee shops or malls to post the latest on gadgets, technology, and my own journey to financial freedom.
By moving to the solo room, I no longer have a roommate who might be disturbed when I blog at night. And my honey and I would have a place to chillax whenever we want without having to spend lots of moolah for overpriced doughnuts or coffee.
There was no feasibility test conducted to prove this but I think that by adding Php1200 monthly expense for rent and Php649 for the unlimited internet access, I could significantly decrease my dining out and parking expenses. Based on the assumption that we go to Starbucks or Krispy Kreme thrice a week, and spend around Php150 per visit, that already amounts to Php1800. Add Php300 for parking and another Php1200 (Php100 per meal per visit) for dinner, that’s already Php3300 worth of expenses. And that was only for three days worth of wifi access.
Because of that, I thought of subscribing to an unlimited wireless internet service. Fortunately, Sun Broadband Wireless was around. Despite Sun’s reputation (poor network coverage, unclear calls), it lived up to expectations when it comes to the internet service. Now I am connected 24/7.
Moving to the solo room was a necessity. But to be able to use the place to chillax without spending for coffee or doughnuts was the clincher. I thought of moving to a different apartment. But being in the condo share is much more convenient. In here, the fridge is already provided, TV cable too. Assuming I moved to an different apartment, I would have needed to spend Php8000-12000 for the fridge alone. If it were availed of via 0% interest credit card installment, that’s an additional Php1000 a month. And of course, the electricity and water bills are charged all to me only. That would have sucked.
This real-life experiment of mine is like subtraction by addition. Or spending more to save more. Whether it works or not, however, remains to be seen. Keep coming back to Geek and Money for updates on my Subtraction by Addition experiment. Hopefully, it would help me reduce my expenses and therefore increase my savings. Maybe you could try them too. Let me know how it works out for you by dropping a comment below.
