The Cost Of An iPhone 3G In The Philippines
- 5 Comment

Now that Globe has come up with special plans and prices (which were ridiculously expensive) for the highly anticipated Apple iPhone 3G, which is to be realeased on August 22, 2008, it is time to compare each plan and determine which is the most “affordable.” Of course, this geek understands that the term is “affordable” is relative but for your convenience sake, let’s say the word “affordable” means least total cost of ownership after two years while having the best deal possible.

The G-Text Plan has least cost of ownership after two years. However, the G-Text Plan does not have anything else to offer but low monthly bills. Of course, if you use your iPhone to surf the net using 3G, it’s going to cost a lot. Time-based charging takes P5 per 15 minutes. KiloByte based charging take P0.15 per KB. If you were connected to the net four hours a day, that would mean an extra P2400 a month on top of your bill. If you want the iPhone just for the sake of having one at a discounted price, This is the way to go.
The GFlex Plan offers more bang for the buck since you could use the whole plan to surf the net. You still got free text to come with the plan. If you’re budget conscious, GFlex Plan 800 should fit you well.
With the special iPhone Plans, you are given “free” 3G internet hours and WiFi hours where Globe Wiz hotspots are available. Plan 1599 has the least cost of ownership among iPhone Plans. But at P1599, it is like paying for a GMix Plan 800 + Globe Visibility Plan P799 (40 hours 3G browsing + 20 hours WiFi). But there’s a catch, if you exceed the allotted 40 hours of 3G browsing, you’ll be charged P0.50 per minute in excess of 40 hours. That’s like paying P30 per hour. And with WiFi, P2 per minute in excess of 20 hours
Out of all the plans, Plan 1599 and GFlex Plan 800 offer the best deals. If I were to get an iPhone, I’d get a big P8800 discount (for the 16GB iPhone 3G at iPhone Plan 1599) but that’s because I’m gonna be paying twice as much the monthly bill of a GFlex Plan 800. If I did not have any postpaid line right now, I’d probably get the iPhone 3G at Plan 1599. How about you?
