Mint is ubuntu with green theme and installed no free components. Better for you to install Ubuntu 8.04. But 64 bit edition can bring some problems (like Flash. Adobe dont like 64-bit systems)

I have a 64-bit machine, would there be a difference in performance if i installed a 32-bit version of Ubuntu instead?

Yes, it will be the difference but not huge.
